recipe for press

Communications intern

During my junior year of college, I worked for a tiny company called Recipe for Press. My friends and my parents weren't really sure what I was up to, but I knew that the woman behind Recipe for Press was a woman worth knowing

Amy Flurry is an Athens-based entrepreneur with more than two decades of editorial experience at major magazine publications such as Lucky, Country Living, Condé Nast Traveler, InStyle, Better Homes & Gardens. Her business and book, Recipe for Press, has been called “the small business blueprint for DIY publicity.” Amy’s corresponding lectures, workshops and online resources educate entrepreneurs on how to refine their message and engage the media.

Somehow, Amy also finds the time to run a pretty incredible year-long internship program. As a Communications Intern, I generated weekly blog content, designed custom slide decks, and created infographics for social media. But most importantly, I was offered a seat at the table. I was treated not as an intern, but as an equal—a member of the team whose voice and whose vision were worth listening to.

Amy Flurry taught me a valuable lesson about PR (and about people) that I haven't forgotten: meaningful, personal relationships are always a worthwhile investment. That's kind of the recipe for everything, isn't it?
