The New Media Institute (NMI) is an interdisciplinary academic unit at UGA dedicated to exploring the critical, commercial and creative dimensions of emerging technologies. It teaches and trains the next generation of new media professionals and provides even non-technical students with technical skills and knowledge.
I first stepped foot in the New Media Institute in August 2013, and—as I often joked—didn’t find my way out for the next four years. My official title was Graduate Assistant, but over the years I also became resident copy-editor, presentation whisperer, and (my personal favorite) unofficial event DJ.
This was the place where I first learned how to write emails, lead meetings, manage teams, and meet deadlines; it was the place where I learned how to have uncomfortable conversations, how to ask for help when you need it, and how to speak up when you have something important to say. This was the place I met college roommates, future employers, and lifelong friends.
Most people that age don't have the experience of working somewhere for as long as I did, of seeing a place grow into something better and knowing that you've been a part of it. I know how special that is.
